Job Overview:
The Assistant Controller will report directly to the President and will play a critical role in managing the financial operations of the company. This position is responsible for assisting with the oversight of all accounting functions, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, and providing insightful financial analysis to support strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of construction accounting principles, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting:
- Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Prepare and analyze financial reports, including variance analysis, budget comparisons, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Assist with the preparation of reports for management, investors, and other stakeholders.
General Ledger and Accounting Operations:
- Oversee the maintenance of the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all financial transactions.
- Manage and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and accruals.
- Ensure the timely and accurate processing of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets.
Construction Accounting:
- Apply knowledge of construction accounting principles, including percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Track project costs, including labor, materials, subcontractors, and overhead.
- Assist with the preparation of work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and analysis.
- Review and analyze project profitability and identify areas for improvement.
- Ensure accurate billing and collection processes for construction projects.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Assist in the development and monitoring of the company and project budgets.
- Prepare and analyze budget variances and provide explanations for deviations.
- Contribute to the development of financial forecasts and projections.
Compliance and Audits:
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Assist with the coordination of external audits and the preparation of audit schedules.
- Support the implementation and adherence to company accounting ERP, policies, and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- CPA certification strongly preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, with specific experience in the construction industry highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and construction accounting principles (e.g., percentage-of-completion).
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., Hyperion, Yardi).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with expertise in Excel (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, complex formulas).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively and build strong working relationships with internal teams and external clients.
- Proactive and self-motivated with a positive, can-do attitude.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in construction, homebuilding or real estate industries.
- Experience with insurance-related accounting or disaster recovery projects.
- Previous supervisory experience.
Compensation details: 120000-150000 Yearly Salary
