*Commercial Construction – Safety Specialist*

*GENERAL DESCRIPTION:*

The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing and maintaining Federal, State, and Company safety standards across Fowler & Hammer’s portfolio of commercial construction projects. This position works both in the field and office, ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance. Typical project sites are within a 90-mile radius of La Crosse, WI, with occasional travel beyond that area as needed.

*RESPONSIBILITIES:*

* Ensure compliance with OSHA, MSHA, USACE, DOT, and Company safety standards on all job sites.
* Develop and deliver safety training programs, including toolbox talks, equipment and activity specific trainings and regular jobsite safety meetings.
* Create, implement, and maintain Site-Specific Safety Plans such as Emergency Action Plans, AHAs, JSAs, and JHAs.
* Partner with superintendents and foremen to identify hazards, perform audits, and correct unsafe conditions.
* Conduct regular and unscheduled safety inspections; document findings and communicate results to the project team.
* Exercise stop-work authority when serious or life-threatening hazards are identified, and document all actions taken.
* Oversee subcontractor compliance on projects where Fowler & Hammer serves as the General Contractor.
* Promote and support the Company’s overall Health and Safety Program across all environments — field, shop, yard and office.
* Participate in incident investigations, OSHA consultations, and compliance reviews.
* Coordinate and manage the Drug Testing Program, including scheduling and union-related compliance.
* Assist with workers’ compensation cases and the return-to-work program in collaboration with the Director of Labor & Safety.
* Maintain and manage PPE inventory, ensuring all trades are adequately equipped.
* Inspect PPE, tools, and equipment for proper condition and suitability for use.
* Stay current with industry best practices through continuing education and professional development.
* Perform related administrative duties and additional tasks as assigned.

*JOB REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS*

* Five (5) years of commercial construction experience preferred.
* Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Safety Management, or Risk Control/Safety Management preferred.
* Proven ability to recognize, assess, and mitigate hazards effectively.
* Positive, professional demeanor with strong team collaboration, relationship building and customer service skills.
* Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations and standards across multiple agencies and jurisdictions.
* Excellent time management, organization, and communication skills (verbal and written).
* Self-motivated and capable of managing multiple priorities across complex projects.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
* Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
